Performance Anxiety Treatment

Are you struggling with performance anxiety? Whether you are preparing for an important presentation, stepping on stage, competing in an athletic event, speaking in a meeting, going to a job interview, or being evaluated by others, performance anxiety can make situations that matter to you feel overwhelming. You may know you're prepared, yet still experience racing thoughts, pounding heart, shaking, sweating, difficulty concentrating, or a fear of making a mistake. Sometimes the worry begins days or even weeks before the event itself.

What is performance anxiety?

Performance anxiety is intense fear or nervousness that occurs when you anticipate being observed, evaluated, or judged while performing a task. For some people, anxiety primarily appears immediately before a performance. For others, worry can begin long in advance and continue afterward through replaying what happened or worrying what others thought. These reactions can become frustrating, particularly when you know you have the skills or preparation to succeed. These experiences can lead to avoidance over time.

Treatment for Performance Anxiety

Treatment focuses on helping you change your relationship with anxiety rather than allowing fear to determine what you can or cannot do. Therapy can help you examine your anxiety, so that you do not act from it. Avoiding presentations, competitions, opportunities, or challenging situations may provide relief in the short-term, but can reinforce fears over time. Therapy can help you tolerate your discomfort and gradually approach situations with greater confidence. You will learn strategies for managing anxious thoughts and physical sensations while remaining focused on the task in front of you. Your treatment will be tailored to your specific experiences, goals, and circumstances.

At Center for Mental Health and Wellness, you will experience a supportive, judgment-free environment where you can work toward greater confidence and freedom in the situations that matter most to you. Don't let performance anxiety hold you back anymore. Develop greater confidence and perform your best. Schedule an appointment today.
