Therapy and Counseling
The words psychotherapy and counseling are relatively interchangeable. Both are forms of talk-therapy that can be used for a variety of issues and presenting problems. Most people know that therapeutic interventions work for conditions such as depression, anxiety and addiction, and we can help you with that. But did you know that counseling can also be used for many other concerns such as stress at work, relationship conflict, parenting, and management of everyday life issues? Therapy does not have to be limited to only when times get really tough. It is okay to ask for help, even if it is just with management of everyday stressors. In today’s chaotic world it makes sense that you would feel a bit overwhelmed just from the demands of modern life. Don’t wait until it feels unbearable before seeking help. Schedule Now.
What is Psychotherapy? |
The process of therapy is often unfamiliar to many people when entering psychotherapy for the first time. A therapeutic relationship is not like any other and can feel uncomfortable in the beginning. Although, it is generally a very rewarding experience that is often life changing.
During your first session, we will discuss your story and what brings you into therapy. In the next session, we will work together to develop a treatment plan for resolving your presenting problem(s) and moving toward change. We will collaboratively create goals for your treatment. We will discuss various coping skills and other options for resolving your concerns. The proceeding sessions will focus on the development of skills, further discussion of your story, and continued movement toward change in your life. If you have not participated in psychotherapy in the past, the process will likely appear different than what you expect. Therapists will provide you with skills and strategies for managing crisis, but advice is often limited during the process of therapy. It is the mechanism of empathy, validation, reflective listening, attunement, and nonjudgmental stance that often facilitates the process of change. This therapeutic approach frequently allows clients to make better decisions on their own in the future without the need for external validation.
